No brevetti sui semi.

Quest’anno i prodotti certificati aumenteranno.
Climate and biodiversity crisis. New Common Agricultural Policy plans ignore climate reality and biodiversity crisis.
A new assessment released by Birdlife Europe and the European Environmental Bureau finds that EU Member States are failing to use CAP funds to address environmental degradation from intensive agriculture practices. This comes in time when member states are putting a final touch on their CAP strategic plans before their submission for the approval by the European Commission.
In two new briefings on soil health and grasslands conservation, national agricultural experts at Birdlife and the EEB analysed how eight and eleven EU member states respectively planned to use CAP funds to protect and manage grasslands and to ensure and safeguard soil health on EU farms.
The briefings find that member states’ CAP strategic plans are insufficient
CAP plans for 2023-2027 fail to adequately protect and sustainably manage valuable grasslands and show too little ambition to safeguard EU soils.
The findings are at odds with the EU Green Deal’s ambitions for its Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies.
This complements the findings of two linked Birdlife and EEB briefings that demonstrate the draft CAP strategic plans are unlikely to reach the 10% biodiversity target set by the EU Biodiversity Strategy. The plans fail to sufficiently protect wetlands and peatlands and, thereby, to safeguard the preservation of carbon-rich soils.
Clearly, there is room for improvement
The European Commission has sent out its Observation Letters to member states, pointing out gaps and calling for higher environmental and climate ambitions.
“Vested interests are arguing that with the conflict in Ukraine taking place, the EU should take a step back from its ambitions for the environment and climate, otherwise it may face global food shortages. But that argument couldn’t be further away from the truth. Science clearly states that healthy ecosystems are our best allies to safeguard our food systems. Sadly, our assessments show that new CAP strategic plans will fail to protect natural resources and support the continuation of damaging policies. Farm Ministers should stop gambling with our future and seriously invest in protecting our planet and the ecosystems our food production relies on,” says Marilda Dhaskali, EU Agriculture Policy Officer, BirdLife Europe.
“The European Parliament has celebrated the 60th anniversary of CAP – one of the oldest, most generously funded and yet most controversial EU policies. The content and ambition of the new generation of CAP strategic plans will be a litmus test of whether this policy will still have any legitimacy in the future,” says Célia Nyssens, Senior Policy Officer for Agriculture and Food Systems, EEB.
Environmental ambitions set by the European Green Deal are integral to addressing biodiversity loss and climate change. However, these targets can not be met if current draft CAP plans that hurt the environment are approved. The series of thematic briefings published by Birdlife Europe and the EEB confirm that the European Commission must push for stronger CAP strategic plans that align with the Green Deal targets.
Key findings from the thematic briefings:
1. Grasslands in the new CAP: bad news for biodiversity and climate (June 2022):
New CAP conditionality leaves large areas of grasslands unprotected, including the most valuable ones. Even if protected, most grasslands are poorly managed. Management schemes that have potential to support sustainable management and protect biodiversity are underfunded, while most funds still support intensification. Measures that would encourage reduction of livestock are missing.
2. Soil and carbon farming in the new CAP: alarming lack of action and ambition (June 2022):
Draft CAP Strategic Plans fail to sufficiently protect EU soils and thereby fail to prevent further soil degradation and loss of soil organic matter. The conditionality requirements relevant to soils (GAEC 5, 6 and 7) are implemented too weakly by Member States to reduce soil threats and slow down soil degradation.
3. Space for nature on farms in the new CAP: not in this round (April 2022):
The analysis shows that the draft CAP strategic plans are unlikely to adequately contribute to reaching the 10% biodiversity target. The reasons include: low mandatory baseline, use of exemptions and weighting factors that inflate the real area. The ambition to support non-productive elements by voluntary schemes measured by indicator R.34 is blatantly inadequate and/or in many cases the area is overestimated.
4. Peatlands and wetlands in the new CAP: too little action to protect and restore (April 2022)
Draft CAP Strategic Plans currently fail to sufficiently protect wetlands and peatlands and thereby to safeguard the preservation of carbon rich soils. Unfortunately, GAEC 2 is implemented weakly by Member States and in some cases even delayed, thereby contributing to the destructive status quo of peatland drainage and intensive use for agriculture.

Sistema sub-irrigazione.
Fast-food emissions and water management. A three-year global investor engagement with fast food giants has resulted in significant progress on climate target setting but has raised concerns for investors about the management of both emissions and water usage in the supply chain, according to a new progress report published today by the global investor network FAIRR and the sustainability organization Ceres.
Led by an $11 trillion investor coalition, the Global Investor Engagement on Meat Sourcing focused on six leading fast-food companies with a combined market cap of more than $281 billion: Chipotle Mexican Grill, Domino’s Pizza, McDonald’s, Restaurant Brands International (owners of Burger King), Wendy’s Co. and Yum! Brands (owners of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell). The coalition, which includes over 90 investors, urged companies to de-risk their meat and dairy supply chains by setting ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while reducing water usage and their impacts on water quality.
The report, Global Investor Engagement on Meat Sourcing Progress Update 2022, reveals that all six fast food companies have now publicly set, or committed to set, science-based targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) (*).
Chipotle has committed to reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 50% by 2030.
The report also shows that well over 90% of these companies’ emissions come from scope 3 emissions where suppliers of meat and dairy products are a key concern and play a significant role. However, only two of the six firms, RBI and Yum!, disclosed total emissions derived from animal agriculture. Both companies listed meat and dairy suppliers as responsible for more than half (57% and 51% respectively) of their total emissions.
Investors warn this lack of transparency in the animal agriculture supply chain could undermine the efforts of food brands to tackle climate risk.
The Global Investor Engagement on Meat Sourcing was coordinated by FAIRR and Ceres.
Cristina Figaredo, Senior Manager, Research & Engagement at FAIRR, said: “Regulators and influential frameworks such as the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) are tightening requirements for the food sector to report and act on climate. So, investors are very concerned that ambitious climate targets by fast food companies are not translating into action along the supply chain. The lack of alignment of supplier policies with corporate climate ambitions risks undermining the efforts of these high-street brands to tackle climate risk. Their performance on water is also alarmingly poor, and efforts to mitigate risks related to water scarcity and pollution have stagnated over the past year.”
Addressing risks to the global water supply
None of the fast-food firms have set enterprise-level targets to reduce water pollution and consumption across their supply chains (**).
This is despite the food industry ranking as the largest driver by far of water consumption, water pollution, and other water-related impacts globally. While some companies, including Wendy’s, McDonald’s and Yum!, have begun setting targets to address their water impacts in their operations, investors continue to stress that they are failing to address larger risks within the agricultural supply chain. This is especially important because the agricultural supply chain make up the bulk of companies’ water footprint. Domino’s’ 2020 materiality assessment found that the production of ingredients accounted for 88% of its overall water consumption.
Currently, RBI has not disclosed any efforts to analyse water risks in their operations, while McDonald’s is the only company that has conducted a comprehensive water risk assessment that includes its supply chain. This means five of the six companies may be unaware of how much water is being drawn from areas of high-water stress and resulting water scarcity risks.
Daniel Shepard, Senior Associate of Investor Engagement, Water at Ceres, said: “When investors come together to move companies to action on climate and water risks, we see the power of capital markets to accelerate the shift to a more just, sustainable economy. While there is much more to do, the results of this engagement show that we are making progress.
The time is now for companies to double down on their commitments and demonstrate real impact. We are particularly focused on advancing better water risk management in supply chains, an often overlooked, but equally important, side of the climate change coin.”
John Anzani, LAPFF Executive Committee Member, said: “For many years, fast food companies have been laggards when it came to acting on climate risk, so we are pleased to see that all six of these fast-food giants have now committed to Science-Based Targets – an increase from just two in 2020.
However, progress on water, a key impact in this sector is lagging. We will be working with other investors to help capital markets properly value water and manage water impacts across industries.”
Masaru Okubo, Senior Stewardship Officer at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management, said: “It is imperative that companies implement strong policies governing how they source meat and dairy, and engage suppliers to align their supply chains with corporate targets on climate and water.”
(*) Wendy’s and Domino’s have confirmed they will submit targets for approval by SBTi. All other firms have had their Science-Based Targets set and approved by SBTi.
(**) Covering their own operations and throughout the value chain, including direct and indirect suppliers.
The FAIRR Initiative is a collaborative investor network, founded by Jeremy Coller, with a membership of $55 trillion assets under management. FAIRR works with institutional investors to define the material ESG issues linked to intensive livestock and fish farming systems and provide them with the tools necessary to integrate this information into their asset stewardship and investment decisions.
This includes the Coller FAIRR Index, the world’s first comprehensive assessment of the largest global animal protein companies on environmental, social and governance issues.
Ceres is a nonprofit organization working with the most influential capital market leaders to solve the world’s greatest sustainability challenges.
“L’iniziativa Etichetta Consapevole è uno dei fondamenti dell’impegno di Too Good To Go contro lo spreco alimentare.
Nel 2021, secondo il Report App Annie, Too Good To Go è stata l’app più scaricata in Italia nel settore Food & Drink.

Salvaguardia Antichi Semi Italiani.
